The Last Gatekeeper

The Last Gatekeeper is an immersive, multi-media, musical theater piece inspired by the writings of West African shaman Malidoma Patrice Somé. The term gatekeeper refers to the indigenous belief that those who express themselves as same-gender-loving maintain the portals between the physical and spiritual world and are connected to both. They are guardians who restore balance and harmony when there is crisis.

The Last Gatekeeper addresses the complexity of being a gifted, same-gender-loving, black boy in a world that wants to erase them. It also openly displays the magic and mystery of what it is to be a spiritual being in a physical body. The ancestor spirits that guide the main character help him tap into his own magic as a physical being. Through special effects, the ancestor spirits will seem larger than life, but they exemplify the depth and breadth of the guidance that we all have access to. I believe this musical will not only bring awareness to the often-misunderstood histories and beliefs of indigenous peoples, but also shed light on how we can use their wisdom to transform our world and ourselves.

Brown Liquor & Blessed Oil

My creative work explores how people navigate the sacred and the profane, the flesh and spirit - the natural the supernatural. I recognize the synergy between these worlds and my understanding of each greatly influences my work. Brown Liquor and Blessed Oil is my musical exploration of these worlds and my invitation for the listeners to explore them with me.
